The DC Cinematic Universe May Be One Massive “Justice League Oriented” Story

Much of the talk surrounding Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has been in regards to whether or not the film will end up being a true Man of Steel sequel. Ever since Batman's inclusion was announced at Comic-Con nearly a year ago, many fans cried fowl, claiming that the Dark Knight was "stealing" Superman's movie, and that DC was allowing the hijacking in order to set up the Justice League film.

Of course, Smith’s comments should be taken as speculation for now, considering he has nothing to do with the film’s production. However, his ties to the industry and to the folks at both Warner Bros. and DC mean that he may have an understanding of the direction they’re hoping to take with the DCCU. Additionally, his comments do fall in line with what we’ve been expecting ever since Dawn of Justice was announced: that Man of Steel was not just the beginning of a new Superman story, but the foundation for Justice League and a launching point for the DCCU.

This news also helps set Warner Bros.’ approach to their cinematic universe apart from Marvel’s. While the rival studio has used solo stories to slowly build up a larger narrative, DC will instead use the larger story to set up the smaller ones, making their entire universe revolve around the Justice League.

Now, what comes after that Justice League film is still a mystery. Are Smith’s claims of a five or six-movie plan legitimate? We’re bound to get more Batman and Superman solo films down the line, but what can we expect from the supporting players, like Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern?

Unfortunately, we likely won’t have any solid answers to those questions for some time, and will just have to sit back and wait to see what Warner Bros. have planned for these characters. Regardless of which direction they take, and how it affects a Man of Steel sequel, I’m frankly just relieved that the studio has a plan at all. They’ve spent so much time holding back on these beloved properties that the very notion of a larger DCCU is incredibly exciting.

Tell us, how do you feel about this news? Do you like the idea of a Justice League-oriented DC movie universe, or would you rather see traditional solo films and sequels? Sound off in the comments below!
