M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth Plot Synopsis Finally Revealed

Most people gave up on M. Night Shyamalan producing anything of worth in Hollywood a long time ago, but hopefully his upcoming feature After Earth will be different. I must confess, part of me hopes that The Sixth Sense director will derive an incredible comeback that will make naysayers take notice of him once more.

With Will Smith and son Jaden on board, most people are bound to take notice of the film, despite being turned off by Shyamalan’s involvement. Though we know it’s a sci-fi pic, up until know, we really didn’t know much more in terms of plot or story. Today though, that all changes.

The official plot description, possibly containing spoilers, has been delivered by /Film via the San Diego Comic-Con website. You can check it out below.

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Admittedly, it does sound interesting and it seems like something that Will and Jaden can have some fun with. But still, with Shyamalan behind the camera, it’s a gamble. I really don’t know if I can get on board with this one just yet.

After Earth is expected to hit theaters on June 7th, 2013.
