After breaking out in an absolutely huge way with the comedy smash Bridesmaids, former Saturday Night Live actress Kristen Wiig is prepping for her directorial debut – and to take on the challenge, she’s enlisting the help of longtime collaborator Annie Mumolo. The pair, who previously co-wrote Bridesmaids, will write, produce and star in a currently untitled comedy for TriStar, which Wiig is expected to helm.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps, The Hollywood Reporter says that “Wiig and Mumolo will play best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths.” Granted, that’s not much to go on, but we’d honestly follow Wiig and Mumolo anywhere after Bridesmaids, so this is definitely a project we’ll be keeping an eye on.

In a humorous statement confirming their upcoming team-up, Wiig and Mumolo wrote:

“We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”

Considering that Wiig and Mumolo’s last collaboration grossed $288.4 million worldwide and earned them an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, we’re pretty excited to see their second act. TriStar Productions head Tim Rothman echoed our excitement in a statment, saying:

“Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now. So we grabbed it. Perhaps more to the point, these two supremely talented ladies are always ahead of the comedy curve, and as we at TriStar push for originality, we are lucky as hell to be in business with them. The chance to hopefully make Kristen’s first film as a director is the cherry on top.”

We’ll keep you posted as news about this sure-to-be hilarious project emerges.
