In today’s “huh?” news story, via a Tweet, director Robert Rodriguez dropped that bizarre nugget that pop megastar Lady Gaga had joined his pulp sequel Machete Kills in the role of “La Chameleon.”

Now, Rodriguez is far from a stranger when it comes to casting atypical character actors and choosing generally odd individuals in his features, but this is certainly new territory. The closest would have to be the casting of Latin artist Enrique Iglesias in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Even more strange is that apparently not a single person other than the Texas native and those closest to him even knew of Lady Gaga’s (real name Stefani Germanotta) involvement.

Rodriguez Tweeted:

“I just finished working with @LadyGaga on @MacheteKills, she kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!”

In the original Machete, the higher profile performers (which in the latter case included Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan and to a lesser extent Steven Seagal) had little more than extended cameos, so it would be safe to assume Lady Gaga’s screen time will be similarly brief.

In addition to that news, Rodriguez unleashed a rather spicy character poster featuring the starlet (those with an affiliation with PETA may want to skip a look). What exact role La Chameleon will play in Machete Kills is at this stage a mystery but assuming she is some sort of seductress, hit-woman (or combination of the two) is a fair call.

Machete Kills will see the return of Danny Trejo as the titular assassin along with Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez in addition to new arrivals Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Mel Gibson, who will play the film’s villain. The sequel will follow Machete’s attempt to stop Gibson’s Luther Voz from launching a weapon into space.
