As the footage speeds through the decades, we see Tom Hardy step into the dusty shoes left vacant by series stalwart Mel Gibson. He will, of course, pick up the mantle as Max, the Road Warrior trying to survive in the director’s unforgiving post-apocalyptic Wasteland. After crossing paths with the devious, mongering Immortan Joe, our protagonist soon finds himself at ends on how to topple the tyrannical leader. It isn’t long before Hardy’s grizzled character finds solace in Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, and together the two must escape the pursing Joe if they have any chance of making it out alive.

More than anything, one thing that is immediately striking about Fury Road is the sheer scale of the film’s bombastic practical effects, lighting up the sun-scorched desert in a way that Michael Bay could only dream. Here’s hoping the story lives up to those dazzling visuals.

Tom Hardy will be joined by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hugh Keays-Byrne as the malevolent Immortan Joe when Mad Max: Fury Road screeches into theaters in time for May 15.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
