The original Sarah Connor will be returning to the sci-fi franchise for the first time since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which also happens to be the last movie in this series that most of us can agree was actually good. With James Cameron also back on production duties, the feature looks very much like an attempt to restore the property to glory after years of lackluster sequels.

With the film scrapping every previous installment from the series timeline save for the first two, the projects invites obvious comparisons to the latest Halloween movie – another soft reboot which saw the return of the franchise’s original leading lady and the dismissal of less favored entries in the saga. And seeing how that flick came out to strong reviews and is continuing to dominate at the box office, perhaps we can take these parallels as a good omen for the next Terminator.

With Deadpool helmsman Tim Miller brought in to direct, Cameron seems intent on updating this property for our more technologically advanced times, explaining earlier this year:

“We’re developing a new Terminator film. And The Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence. But I would say we’re looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just your classic ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. Nowadays though — it’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective. So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’ That’s the new motif.”

From the sound of things, the film’s aiming to be more than a nostalgic re-tread of the franchise’s best entries, but the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger is once more back on board is sure to get the attention of some old-school action fans looking for a little throwback fun. In any case, with Wonder Woman 1984 recently vacating its 2019 release slot, it’s reported that The Terminator sequel has been moved up to take its place, with the film now scheduled to hit theaters next year on November 1st.
