They’ve sailed the high seas with Captain Jack Sparrow, put their d**ks in a box, sported killer turtlenecks and chains, and just had sex – now, musical comedy trio The Lonely Island, comprised of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, are making a movie. Universal has picked up the project, set in the world of music, which the three will star in and produce.

Judd Apatow is on board as a producer through his Judd Apatow Productions banner, while Taccone and Schaffer are set to split directing duties. Neither are first-timers – Schaffer and Taccone co-directed the popular Saturday Night Live Digital Comedy sketches, including for the aforementioned songs and many more, which propelled The Lonely Island to international stardom.

Schaffer also directed Hot Rod, the first film to star the troupe’s members which was not a box office success but has since become a cult film, and alien invasion comedy The Watch. For his part, Taccone previously helmed SNL sketch feature MacGruber and episodes of both NBC’s Parks and Recreation and Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine (the latter of which stars Samberg).

Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but the trio’s satirical, raunchy musical stylings might provide an indication of what direction a film could go in. Feel free to speculate and dream on in the comments below – we’ll keep you posted as more on The Lonely Island‘s latest is revealed.
