Did We Already Know The Main Idea Behind Terminator Genisys Two Years Ago?

The anticipated fifth instalment of the Terminator franchise, Terminator Genisys, finished shooting in New Orleans this past August. Appearing in the latest battle against Skynet are Emilia Clarke as the badass Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as her son John Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese and Arnold Schwarzennegger, who's reprising his role as the now-aged T-800. Aside from the cast list, there's little else to go on. Or is there?

What’s the most interesting thing to note here is that first of all, he’s pretty much revealed the same information to both outlets; the film will be a new approach to the same characters, without conforming to being a strict sequel or reboot. That is, until he let this little tidbit drop. CS pressed the actor for details on the budding romance between his character, Kyle, and Emilia Clarke’s Sarah, and his response was very intriguing:

I can literally tell you nothing. I’m sorry. I don’t even know if there is romance, man. Maybe the romance is between Kyle and Arnold. (laughs) Maybe.

Recently, J.K. Simmons, who also has a part in the movie, called it “an intelligent, fun, love story”. Does this mean that Simmons and Courtney were bound by different confidentiality agreements? For Courtney to say “I don’t even know if there is romance” could indicate he was having a laugh, or really had no clue as to the content of scenes shot without him.

Or, could it simply mean that the love story is not between Sarah and Kyle?

If you cast your minds back, nearly two years ago we reported that a version of Terminator 5 which was scrapped had an alternate timeline. A story idea that sounds nearly identical to Courtney’s latest press discussions. According to that older news, it would have revived the pair for a splintered timeline in which they both would have survived. Does this mean that they don’t fall in love and have a night of passion and make a little baby John Connor? It certainly might be the case, which, could answer questions about who the first John Connor’s father was. The John who sent Kyle back was the product of someone’s loins, and fan theory suggests that in the first “cycle” of the time-travel grandfather paradox, John’s dad was indeed someone else.

Anyhoo, it’s easily to speculate… but darnit, it’s a lot of fun! Especially as The Terminator franchise is one of my all-time favourites.

Now that you’ve had time to ingest, what do you think will happen in Terminator Genisys? Does the idea of Kyle and Sarah never falling in love make your soul cry a bit?
