Marvel is now casting for the franchise's first transgender hero, who may appear in Taika Waititi's upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will be looking for a queen in the upcoming Thor: Love And Thunder, that much we know for sure. In a reveal that probably floored the audience at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, it was announced that Valkyrie will be Marvel’s first LGBTQ hero.

Of course, this is a long time coming, as the studio’s been teasing the world with more LGBTQ representation in their movies for years but has yet to deliver. Now, though, they’re ready to make good on their promise and not only will Love and Thunder include LGBTQ representation in the form of Valkyrie, but we may be getting a transgender hero as well in the film.

The GWW have heard that Marvel’s currently searching for a transwoman to play a role going under the codename “Jessica.” It’s unclear what the actual part is or what project it’s for, but the outlet believes the character in question is actually Sera, Marvel’s only existing transwoman hero.

As The GWW explains:

“Sera’s an Anchorite, a small group of male, wingless Angels who were kept inside a temple in Heven, the Tenth Realm. Sera was the only one of the Anchorites who identified as a woman, thus being the first and, so far, only major transwoman in Marvel comics. She was kept inside the temple until she met Angela, Thor’s long-lost half-sister, and helped her defeat a monster. For her help, Angela freed Sera and they stuck together through many adventures across the Nine Realms, eventually becoming lovers.”

Of course, those who read the comics will know that Sera is closely associated with the Thor canon, which fuels the speculation of her appearing in Love and Thunder. Perhaps even as Valkyrie’s queen? Then again, Marvel has yet to confirm any of this, so take it with the usual grain of salt.

Regardless, it’s clear that the studio is finally making good on their promise to increase diversity in the MCU and even if Thor: Love and Thunder doesn’t feature the first transgender hero, fans can rest easy knowing that that particular milestone will soon be met.
