The team behind the upcoming Avengers 4 have made it pretty clear by now how much they love to troll their fans with teases and non-hints for this highly anticipated Infinity War sequel. But to be fair, there are two sides to this game, and even when actor Don Cheadle outright admitted that there’s no point in scrutinizing his social media posts for clues, one fan went and did exactly that.
It all started earlier this week, when the star was asked on Twitter if he’d be willing to offer any hints on the title of next year’s release, to which Cheadle gave the less-than-helpful confirmation that the name “incorporates letters that will be organized in a coherent fashion with the express purpose of communicating to the consumer the content of the film.”
Needless to say, the message was a joke, but some fans still combed the comment for information, prompting Cheadle to post the following clarification:
“ok, ok. i’m gonna give you all the biggest hint yet (or is it just information? you be the judge); for one to give a hint about the title, they’d FIRST have to KNOW themselves what the title IS. which i don’t. so … (i wouldn’t spend too much time trying to decode this one).”
In retrospect, Cheadle was practically asking for the kind of loopy analysis that user Caleb Stainbrook then offered…
Cheadle’s response: “I actually love this …”
While Stainbrook’s elaborate theorizing is obviously tongue-in-cheek, the internet has consistently yielded some similarly wild but significantly more sincere MCU analysis, and for a few examples, look no further than the responses to the various teases from directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The filmmaking pair have proven more ambitious than Cheadle in their attempts to toy with fans, with the brothers recently uploading a couple of mysterious images to their social media accounts that’ve got the internet scrambling for clues. And you can expect the Avengers 4 speculation to only intensify in the lead-up to the movie’s release on May 3rd, 2019.
