Ever since it became clear that Disney and Lucasfilm would be releasing standalone Star Wars Anthology movies, fans have been demanding that Ewan McGregor return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for his own solo outing, one which would fill in some of the gaps in his life between the prequel and original trilogies.
We’re getting Rogue One: A Star Wars Story next month, and adventures for Han Solo and Boba Fett over the next few years, but there’s still no sign of a movie for the beloved Jedi Knight. However, there may very well be a good reason for that if Entertainment Weekly reporter Anthony Breznican is to be believed.
Apparently, the reason Lucasfilm isn’t pushing forward with a spinoff is because the main Star Wars Saga may still have plans for the character which could later factor into his movie when it does eventually happen.
“I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan thing happen beyond Episode IX.”
What’s next for Obi-Wan in those outings is hard to say, but McGregor briefly reprised the role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he provided a single line of dialogue. Could it be that fan theories regarding his connection to Rey or Finn are correct? It’s certainly possible, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
If the Jedi Knight does somehow factor into the main Saga though, it would make a lot of sense for Lucasfilm to hold off on launching a solo adventure for Obi-Wan so they can incorporate certain details from those movies into his own. Either way, it’s an exciting time to be a fan of the Star Wars franchise – wouldn’t you say?
