If you happen to follow writer-director Christopher McQuarrie on Instagram (h/t Collider), over the past few weeks you’ve likely been treated to a steady stream of character portraits featuring many of the cast members on board for Mission: Impossible 6.

Filming on Paramount’s globe-trotting blockbuster continues apace, and though it’s far too soon to expect any form of official teaser, McQuarrie has delivered the next best thing. Up until now, we’ve caught a glimpse of franchise mainstay Ving Rhames and newcomer Angela Bassett (Black Panther), and today, the filmmaker has welcomed a certain Man of Steel into the limelight – mustache and all.

Suited, booted, and ready for a bout of good old-fashioned espionage, it looks as though Cavill’s mysterious character is about to embark on that impossible mission – or, at least, a small stage of it – and previous set photos lead us to believe that the towering actor will be playing an ally to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Whatever the case, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison recently hinted that all involved “could not be more excited” about Henry Cavill’s co-lead. Perhaps he’s another IMF operative who has since gone rogue? Let the speculation commence.

In true Mission: Impossible fashion, the as-yet-untitled sixth installment in the long-running series will have Tom Cruise execute a suitably jaw-dropping stunt. He’s scaled the Burj Khalifa and clung on to an airborne military plane, but what’s next? Whatever the cast, the Hollywood veteran has spent the past year training for M:I 6.

We could not be more excited about the character Henry Cavill’s going to play. And I will say after the Burj [Khalifa] we thought it was going to be impossible to top that stunt, and then Tom did the A380 for the plane. What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that’s come before. It is absolutely unbelievable—he’s been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It’s gonna be mind-blowing.

Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Alec Baldwin and not Jeremy Renner, Mission: Impossible 6 is expected to storm into theaters on July 27th, 2018.
