New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ trailer stirs up the ‘who dies?’ debate all over again

It's looking like it'll be a massacre.

The new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer landed during last night’s Super Bowl, and as with previous trailers, it’s clear the movie will be a tearjerker. It’s looking almost certain that some of these beloved characters won’t make it to the credits, with snatches of scenes showing Star-Lord wailing in grief over what seems to be a hospital, characters solemnly carrying bodies, and visible chest wounds.

Social media has been picking over the trailer, and the consensus is that someone’s going to bite the dust. So, who’s for the chop?

Well, this will be Gunn’s final MCU movie (for now):

Rocket Raccoon seems to be a popular choice, though as he seems to find love in the arms of a space otter this would be especially heart-wrenching:

There is a suspicious amount of focus on everyone’s favorite not-raccoon:

Then again, we do see Drax with a visible gaping chest wound. Can he walk this off?

He’s not looking so hot here:

And let’s face it, the shot of Nebula sadly carrying Star-Lord’s body is very ominous (though Rocket sucking down a smoothie at this sad moment may mean he’s not actually dead):

Or could it be a straight-up massacre?

The takeaway here is that you should absolutely sneak some tissues into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when it lands, as the space-faring side of the Marvel universe won’t ever be the same again. And, without Gunn around to tell their story, we think Marvel Studios are willing to let him depart for the distinguished competition with a bang.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
