Featuring a cross-section of the opulent Hollywood nightlife, the footage centers around Zac Efron’s Cole, a would-be DJ who struggles to find a foothold in the hyper-competitive musical scene. As luck – or movie screenwriting – would have it, our protagonist soon finds a shot at the big time fall onto his lap when he crosses paths with Wes Bentley’s older maestro, James. Promising big sets and bigger parties, Efron’s prodigy quickly shoots up the ranks, but head-turning success comes with problems of its own.

Going off of the latest clip, Max Joseph’s We Are Your Friends reads a lot like Magic Mike, particularly with the dynamic between Efron’s lead and Bentley’s older, damaged guide. Granted, with all the stylistic tendencies and cinematography tailored for the GoPro generation, it’s a decidedly more light-hearted take on a similar set-up.

Emily Ratajkowski, Jonny Weston, Shiloh Fernandez and Jon Bernthal make up the supporting cast. We Are Your Friends opens August 28, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

“We Are Your Friends” is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire.

All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.
