The nominations for the 73rd Annual Golden Globes have just been announced, and unlike yesterday’s Screen Actors Guild announcement, there wasn’t really anything in the way of surprises to be found. Todd Haynes’ gorgeous and well-acted drama Carol led the way with five nominations, including Best Picture – Drama, Best Director, two nods for Best Actress – Drama (Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara), and Best Original Score. The Big Short, The Revenant, and Steve Jobs followed with four nominations apiece.
What’s rather interesting to note about these nominations is that no film managed to hit every major spot on the list. The expected winner of Best Picture – Drama, Spotlight, also nabbed nominations in Best Director and Best Screenplay, but failed to get a single acting nod. As mentioned, Carol got in for Best Picture – Drama, as well as for Director and Acting, but failed to nab a Screenplay nod, which is exactly what happened to The Revenant as well (with Room hitting everything but Director).
As usual, one of the most fascinating categories is Best Picture – Comedy/Musical, just because you never know what they’re going to count as a comedy. This year’s bizarre standout nominee is The Martian. You remember that hilarious film about the astronaut that was left for dead on Mars and desperately had to survive until a crew could come rescue him? Seriously though, it had a couple of funny parts, but obviously doesn’t belong in this particular category. Then again, you could say the same thing about the disastrous Trainwreck, except at least comedy is what they were trying to go for.
Other than that, everything here was in the realm of possibility and now we just have to wait for the winners to be announced on January 10th, so be sure to join us then for the annual live-blogging of the winners.
