One of the MCU’s most quietly troubled projects could be dipping deep into the back catalogue for inspiration

The past and the present could be key to the MCU's future.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has endured so much doom and gloom recently in terms of its dwindling critical responses, plummeting box office performances, and widespread delays that it’s very easy to completely forget about Armor Wars.

No offense to Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes – a staunch veteran of the franchise currently generating suspicion on Secret Invasion – but when Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Secret Wars, Fantastic Four, and others are continually getting pushed back, his solo movie often tends to fly under the radar.

Initially conceived as a Disney Plus series, Armor Wars was upgraded to a theatrical feature in September of last year, but so far we don’t know an awful lot about it other than the presence of Yassir Lester remaining on board as writer. However, a new report from The Cosmic Circus teases a deep dive into the MCU back catalogue.

In addition to the rumored return of Walton Goggins’ Sonny Burch, the outlet additionally claims that not only will Dominique Thorne appear to lend an assist as fellow armored hero Ironheart, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val will reach out to none other than Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer for assistance, marking his long-awaited comeback after chewing on the scenery in 2010’s Iron Man 2.

More Iron Man alumni are also rumored to be on the cards, although no specific names or characters or mentioned, but you can bet your house on the latest bout of Robert Downey Jr. speculation igniting the second Armor Wars firms up its cast, crew, schedule, and release date; the latter of which The Cosmic Circus is prognosticating for that open July 2025 slot.
