The first poster for Take Shelter starring Michael Shannon has been released and it’s just as subtely creepy as the film’s stellar trailer. In the movie, Shannon stars opposite of Jessica Chastain as a family man whose dealing with a potential apocalypse.

In the poster, Shannon and Chastain are seen protecting their child next to a storm shelter, with a cloud of Hitchcock-ian birds appearing to descend upon them. I haven’t seen the film, but First Showing says that the role of the birds is limited but important.

The possible insanity of Shannon’s character is hinted at in the trailer, which leaves most of the film’s plot up to mystery. Take Shelter has already screened at Sundance and Cannes, receiving positive reviews from both. It’s an intriguing film that has me very interested and I’m excited to check it out.

Jeff Nichols is writing and directing; he previously worked with Michael Shannon on Shotgun Stories.

Take Shelter is scheduled to have a limited release on September 30th.
