A couple months ago we received news of a September release date for author Stephen Elliott‘s directional debut Cherry. Since then, updates on the project have been pretty quiet, until today. Release earlier this morning is a brand new poster for the film, which has been retitled About Cherry.
The film, which stars Ashley Hinshaw, Heather Graham and James Franco, first premiered on February 16th at the Berlin International Film Festival and was later picked up for U.S. distribution by IFC. To date, it has received mixed, but reasonably positive reviews.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, About Cherry follows:
“Angelina (Hinshaw), an 18-year-old girl on the verge of finishing high school. One morning her boyfriend (Jonny Weston) suggests she take naked pictures for money. She balks at first but then does the photo shoot, using the money to run-off with her best friend (Dav Patel) to San Francisco. In San Francisco, while cocktailing in a strip club, Angelina meets Frances (Franco) a well-off lawyer who offers to introduce her to a different kind of world, a place full of expensive dresses and fancy parties. At the same time Angelina, using the moniker Cherry, has begun exploring the San Francisco porn industry under the direction of Margaret (Graham) a former performer turned adult film director.”
Every year there are those small independent films that just attract your attention and interest usually because they feature some kind of twist on a tale we all know.
For me, About Cherry is one of those films. Being that it revolves around a young girl breaking into the porn industry, the film probably won’t be on everyone’s to see list, but I think it looks very raw and real and should be a great insight into a very intense industry.
About Cherry stars Ashley Hinshaw, Heather Graham, James Franco, Lili Taylor, Dev Patel, Jonny Weston and Diane Farr and it will be released on September 21st, 2012.
