After much teasing and hype building, Lionsgate has finally peeled back the curtain on the very first footage from their upcoming Power Rangers reboot. It’s a bit surprising that the studio chose to debut the trailer before their New York Comic Con panel, which is taking place this afternoon, but we’re certainly not complaining.
This being a teaser, the sight of the fully-costumed Rangers throwing down with their enemies is obviously withheld for the time being, but we do get some nice character setup, as each member’s distinct personalities are clearly defined. Plus, there are a few cool shots of Elizabeth Banks’ villainous Rita Repulsa, and we also see Jason, AKA the Red Ranger, suiting up right at the end.
Overall, it’s hard to get a clear idea of how the movie will turn out with what’s shown here. The tone seems to be grittier and more serious than expected, which is nice to see, but without any real footage of the heroes in action, we’re still very much left in the dark as to how the visual effects will look and how entertaining the film will ultimately be.
[zergpaid]It’s also interesting to see that they’ve done away with much of the campiness and bright colored palette of the original show. Will fans be alright with those significant changes? That remains to be seen, but we can bet that at least a few people were hoping for a reboot that was more in line with what they grew up with.
Power Rangers morphs into theatres on March 24th, 2017 and stars Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Becky Gomez as the Yellow Ranger and RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger. Aside from them, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and Bill Hader all have roles as well.
With the promotional campaign now in full swing, you can expect a lot more from the film soon. Until then, though, check out the first trailer above and let us know what your hopes for the reboot are by leaving a comment below.
