Here’s Why Captain Marvel Punched An Old Lady In The Trailer

The first trailer for Captain Marvel finally landed today and it was everything we hoped it'd be, promising that Brie Larson's Carol Danvers will be exactly the mighty heroine we've been waiting to see show up for the past ten years of the MCU. She's powerful, courageous, unstoppable and... wait, did she just punch an old lady in the face? What kind of hero is she?

Though this moment is hilariously employed in the trailer without any context, Marvel fans should be able to work out what’s going on here. It was revealed at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con that Captain Marvel would introduce the Skrulls into the MCU, the major antagonistic alien race from the comics. What makes the Skrulls such a big deal is that they can shapeshift and they’re known to assimilate themselves into our civilization by taking on human form.

So, when Carol KOs an apparently sweet-looking elderly woman with a mean right hook, it’s most likely that she’s realized that this woman’s a Skrull. Either that, or she has a serious temper on her and she’s just annoyed the old lady stole the last seat on the train. But we’re pretty certain she’s a Skrull. Well, at least we’re certain that Carol’s certain. There could be an extra stinger to this scene that reveals her hunch was wrong and she just decked an innocent civilian, but something tells us that’s not the case.

As the synopsis revealed earlier this morning, Captain Marvel will team up with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Nick Fury when the galactic war between the Kree and the Skrulls comes to Earth. Ben Mendelsohn, meanwhile, is playing their leader, Talos, who’ll worm his way into the alien-busting spy organization by posing as Fury’s boss. We’ll have to see if Carol’s Skrull-dar is just as good at detecting Talos as it was the old lady when the movie hits theaters on March 8th.
