It’s Looking Like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Has Been Cancelled

Luke in The Last Jedi

This December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will wrap up the Skywalker Saga, bringing to a close the story based around Luke and Anakin and their legacy that kicked off all the way back in 1977. But that doesn’t mean the franchise as a whole is coming to a close as well, as Disney already has numerous movies in production that’ll take the saga in brand new directions.

Earlier this week, the studio announced three release dates for a trio of new Star Wars films, with the first one arriving on December 16th, 2022, the second on December 20th, 2024 and the third on December 18th, 2026. As for what these Star Wars movies will be though, well, that’s where things get interesting.

Disney didn’t specify which films would be arriving on the aforementioned dates and now, John Campea, who usually has reliable intel – though not always – is reporting that the three slots all belong to the upcoming trilogy from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Which means that none of them are for Rian Johnson’s trilogy. As such, he believes that The Last Jedi director is no longer working on his Star Wars movies.

Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Johnson’s trilogy is 100% canned. As Campea notes, Disney hasn’t made any sort of official announcement just yet and it could be that Rian’s films have been placed on the back-burner and once Benioff and Weiss complete their trilogy, Disney will bring Johnson back and kickstart his series.

That being said, when you couple this with all of the other concerning reports we’ve heard about Rian’s trilogy, it doesn’t paint a very promising picture. Like Campea, we do hope that he gets to return to that galaxy far, far away to bring us more of his unique vision of the franchise, but at this point, it seems all but confirmed that Rian Johnson is no longer involved with Star Wars, and if that’s indeed the case, then it’s certainly a shame.
