Update: A now-deleted Instagram post from Pacific Rim: Uprising cinematographer Dan Mindel appeared to reveal that Karl Urban was involved in Steven S. DeKnight’s monstrous sequel, but it appears that’s not the case. /Film reached out to the Dredd star yesterday evening, to which he replied:

Original story: Another set photo has emerged from Pacific Rim: Uprising that seemingly appears to confirm the sequel’s cast – and there’s one big surprise.

Karl Urban, star of Dredd and recently Star Trek Beyond, is listed alongside the likes of Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. Neither Legendary nor Warner Bros. has announced anything official at the time of writing, but word is that the latter two are back to reprise their roles as Mako Mori and Dr. Newton Geiszler, respectively, with Karl Urban on board as an entirely new character. File this in the rumor department for now, but here’s the Instagram post from Uprising‘s cinematographer Dan Mindel. The purported list of cast members can be seen fastened to the side of a camera on the right-hand side of the screen.

As production marches on Down Under, Instagram has proven to be a healthy source for Pacific Rim: Uprising content. Earlier today, for instance, a new set photo found its way online showing either John Boyega or his stunt double decked out in battle gear. If nothing else, it confirms that The Force Awakens breakout will take point as a Jaeger pilot for Steven S. DeKnight’s 2018 sequel, flying the flag for Pan Pacific Defense Corps in his father’s stead. Of course, we know that father to be Stacker Pentecost, the apocalypse-cancelling general brought to life by Idris Elba almost four years ago.

When it comes to those alleged casting updates, take Mindel’s post with a pinch of salt for now, but let’s face it: the addition of Karl Urban to DeKnight’s creature feature can only be a good thing.

Pacific Rim: Uprising will be with us on February 23, 2018.
