Robert Downey Jr. Says Playing Iron Man Has Been The Ride Of A Lifetime

Avengers: Endgame finally arrives in US theaters tonight and Marvel fans are well and truly ready to witness the end of the story we’ve seen unfold over the past 11 years and 22 movies. But as big a deal as it is for us fans, it’s an even bigger deal for the cast, and none more so than Robert Downey Jr.

Downey’s the daddy of the MCU, as 2008’s Iron Man is the reason the Avengers are about to star in the biggest movie in the world this weekend. And to mark the occasion, the star took to Twitter today to briefly mention how monumental an occasion it is for him by saying “it’s been the ride of a lifetime.”

It’s weird to think now that Marvel building a franchise around Downey Jr. was seen as a bit of a risk a decade ago, as we all know it turned out to be a perfect match of actor and character and Iron Man was instantly beloved by fans, giving the nascent studio enough clout to plow ahead with their idea to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could fight the battles that we never could… And make a ton of money at the box office in the process.

Heading into Endgame, fans are worried for the fate of various OG heroes, including Tony Stark. We know that Downey’s contract is up with the movie and reflective posts like the one above don’t help shake the feeling that the film is likely to say some permanent goodbyes to some of our heroes. But will Iron Man be among them? All will be revealed as the world finally gets its hands on Avengers: Endgame this weekend.
