Robert Downey Jr. Could Return Via Flashback In Spider-Man 3

Tony Stark's presence is keenly felt in Spider-Man: Far From Home, as Peter Parker struggles with his grief over his mentor's death in Avengers: Endgame and the responsibility of becoming "the new Iron Man" throughout the film. However, despite all those rumors and theories beforehand, Robert Downey Jr. didn't actually shoot any new footage for the sequel. That may change with Spider-Man 3, though.

We Got This Covered has learned that the actor could reprise the part of Stark for Tom Holland’s next solo movie as the friendly neighborhood hero. Our source tells us that Marvel is discussing bringing RDJ back for the threequel. Not that this would mean Stark is set for a resurrection or anything, as this appearance would take the form of a flashback, we’re told. It’s unclear if new footage would be shot for the scene, but we’re being told that it’s a possibility.

In any case, it’s been a unique selling point of the MCU’s Spider-Man that he has such a close relationship with Iron Man. Going back to Captain America: Civil War, Peter owes his entire superhero career to Tony, with Downey Jr. also playing a major role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame then mined this father/son-like bond for a lot of emotion when first Peter was dusted and then Stark sacrificed himself to stop Thanos.

Given this history, it only makes sense for Stark to return in some capacity for Spider-Man 3 as the web-head’s trilogy comes to a close. We’re not sure if this movie will spell the end of the character in the MCU, but hopefully it won’t, as rumors point to Marvel having plans for at least 9 Spidey films. Which is perfectly fine with us.
