Avengers: Endgame Directors Confirm Cap Created A New Timeline

Via CBM, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have cleared up some of the confusion surrounding Cap's fate in Avengers: Endgame.

Much to the surprise of no one, Avengers: Endgame played fast and loose with time travel – so much so, in fact, that it called out all those age-old classics (see: Back to the Future) that journey to a bygone era(s) at some point or another.

And while Endgame is by no means perfect – frankly, there are still one or two plot holes/inconsistencies with the power to irk fans – the Russo Brothers and the sequel’s writing team, led by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, ought to be commended for their efforts. Indeed, if there’s one character who benefited from all the time travel shenanigans, it’s Captain America – Marvel’s man out of time – who was able to reunite with Peggy Carter, his one true love, and dance merrily without a care in the world. We’re not crying; you’re crying!

Steve’s actions effectively created a new timeline, one in which he was able to grow old with Peggy, before traveling back to present day MCU in order to hand over his shield and mantle to Falcon. And that’s something the Russos stand by as well, despite conflicting comments from Markus and McFeely.

Joe: “He would have to come back to this timeline in order to hand off the shield.”

Anthony: “There’s a question of, how did this separate timeline Cap come to reappear in this timeline and why?”

Asked if there’s potential for another Captain America story in the not-so-distant future, Joe Russo strongly hinted that Cap’s MCU saga is far from over. Whether Chris Evans will be back in red, white and blue is another question entirely, but there’s also a possibility that Steve’s emotional finale will be subtly referenced in the upcoming slate of Disney Plus series.

Avengers: Endgame is playing in theaters across the globe right now, and it’s already made a pretty penny (i.e. $2.4 billion) at the box office.
