Despite not releasing the trailer officially beyond the walls of Hall H, 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool still proved to be one of the big winners coming out of San Diego Comic-Con, with attendees singing the praises of Ryan Reynolds’ interpretation of the Merc with a Mouth.

Stepping into the shoes of one Wade Wilson, Reynolds’ trigger-happy, gun-toting lead is a force to be reckoned with, though we get a pre-transformation look at him in today’s new screenshots – positioning him alongside Morena Baccarin’s female lead, Vanessa Carlysle. Disfigured by a rogue experiment gone awry, Wilson is left with accelerated healing and rather than donating his body to science, our protagonist dons the Deadpool mantle and leads his life as a one-man army.

That’s not to say that Reynolds’ anti-hero will be along on this most erratic journey, however, with Brianna Hildebrand playing mutant partner-in-crime, Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

In many ways, this no-holds-barred origin story owes its existence to the power of the people, after last year’s test footage went viral on the Internet, leading 20th Century Fox to fast-track an adaptation that is faithful to the source material. And we can hardly wait to see how Deadpool‘s jump to the silver screen plays out in full.

20th Century Fox plans to release Deadpool in all of its R-rated, NSFW glory on February 12, 2016.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
