Otherwise known as the famous (and deadly!) Black Widow, news of a Romanoff-centric spinoff first brought the Internet to a standstill late last week, when it was revealed that Marvel had enlisted Jac Schaeffer to hash out a script.

Details are still few and far between, but there are already signs of tangible progress, as Marvel Studios looks to capitalize on its biggest female star. And not a moment too soon.

Scarlett Johansson’s former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent arguably enjoyed her best material in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo’s sequel that was steeped in the rich history of ’60s espionage. Taking that into consideration, we’re inclined to believe that the (R-rated?) Black Widow offshoot will double down on the character’s murky history as an ex-Soviet spy.

In fact, that’s something Johansson hopes to see as well. Speaking in a recent interview, the actress revealed some of her ideas for the project, saying:

“She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go, you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”

Continuing on, she noted that the Black Widow movie needs to have its own specific vibe that separates it from the MCU’s other solo outings.

“There are so many ways you can go. I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films.”

Like the actress says here, there really are a lot of avenues for Marvel to take the character in with her own standalone movie, and that’s hugely exciting. This is a project that fans have been calling for for some time now and it’s great to hear that it’s finally moving forward.

Whether or not it’ll indeed be an origins story, or perhaps something set in the present day, remains to be seen, but just knowing that Black Widow will soon have her own vehicle is more than enough to put a smile on our face.
