Now that MGM has found its new RoboCop in Joel Kinnaman, casting for the rest of the roles in the film is underway. The Tracking Board is reporting that Edward Norton is looking to play the role of “Norton, the “brilliant mastermind” responsible for turning brutally-murdered police officer Alex J. Murphy (Kinnaman) into a deadly cyborg cop.”

Rebecca Hall and Gael García Bernal also may be joining the film in the roles of Murphy’s wife and partner, respectively. Lastly, Sean Penn is eyeing the role of “a right-wing news reporter who sticks to his guns when it comes to his political views.”

Names like Penn and Norton suggest that this origin story will be more than just a cash grab. It looks like MGM wants to make a high quality film with their remake. I’m already pleased with the choice of Kinnaman for the lead role and if any of the aforementioned actors end up signing on, I’ll be even happier. Plus, with big names being floated around for the project, fans can rest easy knowing that the studio isn’t just in this for the money.

RoboCop is set to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013.
