If the subscriber cover of this month’s Empire Magazine features the Xenomorph in stasis – drawn up by artist Jacey, you can find the mythic one-sheet right here – then the standard cover for Alien: Covenant awakens the beast in truly horrific fashion.
Teeth baring, the nightmarish close-up is awfully similar to the final shot of Covenant‘s most recent trailer, in which a fully grown Xenomorph clutches onto an airborne ship, much to the horror of Danny McBride’s captain Tennessee. Because make no mistake, if you felt that Prometheus was decidedly lacking in the horror department, Alien: Covenant looks set to herald a return to the series’ roots – and hopefully a return to form – what with Ridley Scott promising an R-rated helping of extraterrestrial terror. Expect blood, then, lots and lots of blood.
Much like Prometheus before it, 20th Century Fox has also rolled out a series of viral clips for Alien: Covenant – viral clips designed to introduce the various members of the crew before D-day. From Michael Fassbender’s cutting-edge synthetic Walter to Christopher Oram, Billy Crudup’s voyager who believes the Covenant is fulfilling a destiny long foretold. His religious beliefs fuel a tension between Oram and Daniels, the terraforming expert to be played by Katherine Waterston. But what’s an Alien movie without a dysfunctional crew at its core?
“Unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality…” Ridley Scott and H.R. Giger’s serpentine nightmare will crawl back onto the silver screen when Alien: Covenant opens on May 19th. It’s both the sequel to Scott’s divisive Prometheus and a prequel to the Alien movie of ’79, what with plans in place for a follow-up (Alien: Awakening, perhaps?) and another trilogy of sci-fi horror.
Buckle up, folks, things are about to get hairy.
