The lengths that Marvel Studios goes to in order to keep its biggest spoilers under wraps are the stuff of legends, but every now and then, a loose-lipped celebrity will accidentally let some intel slip. We’ve already seen this from Avengers: Endgame cast members like Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, but this latest potential bombshell has a far more surprising source in legendary tennis player Serena Williams.
In an Instagram video that was quickly deleted but can still be seen below, Williams and the person she’s talking to are at the Academy Awards, where they sneakily shoot some footage of Captain America actor Chris Evans while pretending to take a selfie. In a moment that’s got the internet talking, Williams can be heard saying that she was “devastated that he died in that movie, Avengers,” at which point, her friend tells her that it’s a “secret.”

So, that’s the footage, but before fans commence their mourning for Steve Rogers, there’s still room for doubt that the spoiler is genuine. For one thing, we don’t even know if Williams has attended an advanced screening of Avengers: Endgame, and with so much of the internet wondering who’s going to meet a sad end in the upcoming film, surely we can’t rule out the possibility that she’s only joking.
Alternatively, since Williams doesn’t specify which Avengers movie she’s talking about, there’s also the slight chance that she’s simply misremembering last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which left audiences feeling pretty “devastated” when it killed off a whole load of superheroes, leaving Cap as one of only a few lucky survivors.
Then again, with Captain America already being one of the most widely predicted fatalities of Avengers: Endgame, it certainly wouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that this spoiler is 100% legit. We’ll find out either way though when the film hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
