While a certain other YA franchise has been grabbing all the headlines of late, that hasn’t stopped Summit Entertainment from drawing attention to the studio’s next chapter in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series, Insurgent.
Directed by franchise newcomer Robert Schwentke, the hotly-anticipated sequel will see the return of Shailene Woodley’s Tris and Theo James’ Four, who are now on the run from the Erudite elite. Joining the leading duo as they venture across the dystopian landscape are Jai Courtney, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.
After its predecessor grossed just under $300 million at the global box office, Insurgent is fast becoming the defining chapter in the relatively young franchise. After all, given that The Maze Runner emulated the success of Divergent financially (more or less) and subsequently earned itself a follow-up, Schwentke’s sequel will now have to compete against The Scorch Trials and the conclusive chapter in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games franchise when it arrives in the early stages of 2015. Granted, it’s arriving several months ahead of those two aforementioned films, but surely there is only so much dystopian action that the young adult audience can enjoy before the set-up becomes a bit long in the tooth.
Insurgent arrives in theaters on March 20th, 2015. Check out the plot summary below and the new trailer above and let us know what you think.
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.
