In a new interview from Vanity Fair with Sony’s Amy Pascal, the producer elaborated a little on what’s to come in the recently announced sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it seems that Phil Lord’s script for the first movie was originally intended to include a romance between Spider-Gwen and Shameik Moore’s character. But while Lord was ultimately advised by producer Christina Steinberg to trim this subplot, the story has apparently been saved for the Joaquim Dos Santos-helmed follow-up.

Though the details pretty much end there, the current speculation is that the sequel might take some inspiration from the “Sitting in a Tree” storyline from the comic books, in which Miles journeys to Spider-Gwen’s dimension in order to save his father.

Evidently, actress Hailee Steinfeld has quite a future in this still-young superhero series, with Sony also announcing earlier this month that Gwen will take the lead in a Spider-Verse spinoff movie, which is said to focus on three generations of female characters with Spidey abilities.

Of course, before Sony goes too far in their plans for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and its fellow franchise installments, they’ll probably want to see how the first film fares with audiences, but so far, things are looking very promising, with the flick garnering some of the best reviews of any superhero movie released this year. Critics have been praising the picture for its vibrant animation and heart, and with the movie out in theaters today, fans can see for themselves if this budding series is worth all the hype.
