That’s all well and good, but anyone who knows anything about Mysterio knows that he’s the secret villain of the movie. Seeing as a late-in-the-day twist of “oh no, he’s the actual bad guy” would be so blindingly obvious though, there must be more to the story than that, right? Well, this intriguing fan theory certainly suggests so, as it asks: what if the real reveal is that there are two Mysterios?

Reddit user Residentswimming posits that if Quentin Beck is from Earth-833, then there must be another Beck on Earth-616 as well. So, what if 833 Beck is the real deal, a wholesome hero out to save the world, but the 616 Beck is the typical version of the character – a down-on-his-luck special effects guy who wants to have his name in lights. What if he realizes this heroic Mysterio is his alter ego and proceeds to pull a Prince and the Pauper and take his place?

This is a workable theory that’s certainly worth considering. After all, it would be mighty mean of Marvel – or rather Sony, who cut the trailers – to tease the existence of an MCU multiverse only to then chalk it up as a lie spun by Mysterio. Hopefully there’s some truth to the concept and they pull off something clever with the twist that he’s actually a villain. Much like Spider-Man: Homecoming managed with revealing that Vulture was Liz’s dad.

For now, all we can do is continue to speculate, but one way or another, the mystery of Mysterio will be solved when Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into cinemas on July 2nd.
