The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water Trailer Is Everything A Superhero Movie Should Be

There are many things wrong with cinema today, but SpongeBob Squarepants is not one of them. There are many things wrong with cinema today, but SpongeBob Squarepants is not one of them. Beloved of children and surreal-minded adults alike, the adventures of the bizarre little sea-sponge and his gang have kept many entertained for years now. It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob got his own 3D film, and now here it is, as we have the first trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

The plot of the film involves SpongeBob and his friends heading to the surface to find the lost recipe for “Krabby Patties,” which have been purloined by nefarious pirate Burger-Beard (Antonio Banderas, with the most amazing facial hair ever). Once on the surface, they enter the realm of 3D animation and eventually become superheroes, with powers that include bubbles and ice cream. It’s pretty much what you would expect, I guess: weird, trippy, and just this side of maniacal. I like it.

While The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is absolutely directed at small children, SpongeBob often appeals to adults and this film looks like it’s no exception. The “instant apocalypse” moment when the Krabby Patty formula goes missing is a highlight of this trailer, as are the searing, rather trippy colors and some amusing, self-aware superhero jokes. There’s also plenty for the kiddies, including tripping on cotton candy and the requisite jokes about bodily functions; not that those aren’t funny to adults as well. We cannot ask for too much in a new SpongeBob movie, but this one looks like it will be entertaining for children and like-minded adults.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water will premiere on February 6, 2015, so be sure to check out the trailer. Also, note the new poster below, featuring our heroes in their superhero personas. I do believe that it has finally gotten weird enough for me.
