Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer May Spoil A Major Rey Reveal

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally dropped earlier today. And while some fans are still in the midst of processing such major reveals as the Emperor’s return and the film’s official title, others have started looking a little closer in the hope of finding a few subtler details. One shot of a ship flying through a lush, foggy environment, for instance, has already managed to inspire some Rey-related speculation. And like most theories regarding Daisy Ridley’s character, this one concerns her parents.

As you may recall, 2017’s The Last Jedi offered the somewhat controversial reveal that Rey’s parents were nothing more than a pair of “filthy junk traders” who sold her off for drinking money. Before that, in The Force Awakens, we got a brief flashback of Rey watching a ship as it blasted off into space, leaving her alone on Jakku. And as ComicBook.com has now pointed out, the spacecraft that left her (viewable in the second slide below) bears some resemblance to the one seen in the new Rise of Skywalker trailer.

So, what does this mean? Well, potentially nothing. After all, the dimly lit trailer scene doesn’t give us a very good look at the ship, making it hard to say if it really is the same one that abandoned Rey. But supposing it is, it would be interesting to see the heroine finally catch up with the people who left her. Granted, Kylo Ren claimed in The Last Jedi that her parents are already dead. But even if we assume the villain is both sincere and correct, perhaps we’ll learn that it wasn’t actually her parents who dropped Rey off on Jakku, but some other characters of great significance.

Again, a single, visually murky shot of a ship isn’t much evidence to go on, but we’ll find out if we really have seen that vessel before when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
