In its first 24 hours of release, The Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer garnered more views than any other movie in the modern Star Wars era.
Per Deadline, Skywalker notched 111 million views soon after its unveiling at the annual Star Wars Celebration event – 20M higher than The Last Jedi (91M) and almost double that achieved by The Force Awakens back in 2014.
It’s a far cry from the likes of Avengers: Endgame (289M) and The Lion King (224M), though it’s important to remember that Star Wars trailers are typically rolled out at major events, whereas other Disney teasers are dropped cold. But above else, Deadline is reporting that The Rise of Skywalker is going viral at a significantly faster rather than its predecessor, as budding fans share footage and create their own memes based on this brief snippet unveiled at Celebration earlier this month.
RelishMix reports that the EOR viral rate for Skywalker is at “a very healthy start” of 295:1 through 10 days based strictly on YouTube views (the data doesn’t include Facebook, Twitter or Instagram views). That number beats the first 10-day viral rate of The Last Jedi (262:1), Force Awakens (120:1) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (68:1),
That’s a pretty incredible achievement in and of itself, particularly when you remember that Star Wars fatigue became a very real concern for Lucasfilm not too long ago. Be that as it may, 2019 is shaping up to be a seminal year for the juggernaut franchise, what with The Mandalorian and the Galaxy’s Edge theme park all set to launch. And, frankly, we don’t know which one we’re most excited for.
When December rolls around, and Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones season 8 have come and gone, Disney and Lucasfilm will launch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and essentially bring the curtain down on this most celebrated movie saga. It’s been 40 years in the making, and we simply can’t wait to see what J.J. Abrams and writer Chris Terrio have in store.
