John Boyega Doesn’t Think He’ll Play Finn After Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

The upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is expected to serve as the final outing for quite a few series regulars. But while most of the characters predicted to drop out after this year’s release are Original Trilogy stars like Luke and Leia, relative newcomer John Boyega has suggested that Finn’s story might also be coming to a close.

Speaking to MTV News, the actor was asked if he thinks he’ll reprise his role for future projects. And instead of giving the standard, Disney-approved answer of “I don’t know,” Boyega claimed that he genuinely thinks he’s done with the franchise.

“Honestly, the bottom of my heart, I don’t think I am,” Boyega said. “I don’t think I am. I feel like it’s–I really do feel that way.”

Elaborating a little, Boyega explained that The Rise of Skywalker serves as such a definitive conclusion to his character’s journey that he’s not sure where things could go from here.

“Honestly, no, seriously, I just–this is really that movie, I think everyone doesn’t believe it, but this is that war that just ends everything. So I’m just like, wow, you know?”

Of course, even if we assume that Boyega is being completely honest here, we still can’t rule out the possibility of Finn’s story continuing after The Rise of Skywalker. After all, the future of the franchise currently feels uncertain, and with the film series set to go on hiatus after this next outing, it’s really too early to tell who will and won’t be needed for the next set of movies.

For what it’s worth, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently mentioned that there are certain Sequel Trilogy stars that they “may very well want to see down the line in the future,” though she stopped short of specifying which characters. The producer did, however, claim that a Knights of the Old Republic project is in development, and if a report from last month is anything to go by, then this just might be the saga that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on.

If so, then we can probably rule out Boyega coming back for those particular films, but maybe there’s still a place for him in Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy. Either way, we can see Finn in action at least one more time when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
