Last week the bizarre rumor that Stephen Colbert was set to make a cameo in Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey made us feel all weird and confused, but the latest reports are confirming that yes, Colbert will make an appearance – but not necessary in the first movie of Jackson’s trilogy.

Colbert is known for his love of J.R.R. Tolkien’s massively popular novels, and is also a big fan of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. He recently went to the set and was shown 25 minutes of exclusive footage from the upcoming movies, and presumably filmed his cameo there and then.

Of course, last week’s rumor wasn’t embraced with too much conviction, given that, hey, Colbert is a satirist, humorist and comedian who easily might get a little kick out of making such things up. But to give the man some credit, it’s looking as though he wasn’t trying to create unnecessary hype at all, but just trying to keep his mouth shut. Which doesn’t happen often.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for its cinematic debut on December 14th, and will serve as a prequel to Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The film also stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen (who reprises his role as Gandalf).
