The hunt for a filmmaker to direct Fast and Furious 8 has been interesting to say the least, especially as there have been some worrying rumblings that Vin Diesel might use his power as a producer to end up placing himself in the director’s chair (something which Universal apparently weren’t even remotely keen on happening).
Well, a new report now reveals that F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) has emerged as the frontrunner to take the helm of the action franchise, which grossed $1 billion worldwide for the first time with Fast and Furious 7 earlier this year.
The Wrap reveals that Vin Diesel and Neal Moritz are currently deciding between him and another director (most likely The Incredible Hulk‘s Louis Leterrier), but it sounds like Gray – who has also been rumoured to be in the running to take the helm of Black Panther for Marvel – is the favourite right now.
That makes sense, too, especially as he worked with Diesel on A Man Apart and with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on Be Cool. He also has plenty of action experience with the likes of The Italian Job and Law Abiding Citizen.
