The fifth and ‘final’ entry in a massively lucrative franchise (that’s got a sequel on the way) returns to the well on Netflix

It was at least the last one until the sequel was announced.

You should never believe anyone in Hollywood who claims that the latest installment in any franchise is designed to be the last, because history has a funny way or proving that the statement is rarely accurate. To the shock of nobody, then, it was almost immediately after The Forever Purge was released that creator James DeMonaco voiced his desire for a sixth film.

Obviously, the simplest explanation as to why the dystopian slasher series is continuing is an incredibly simple one; The Purge has proven to be one of the most profitable enterprises Blumhouse has at its disposal, with the five features to date combining to earn over $500 million at the box office on total production costs of just over $50 million.

Even The Forever Purge turned a tidy profit in the summer of 2021 despite releasing at a time when the theatrical industry was still on its knees, underlining that the IP was still strong enough to draw in a crowd in the midst of a pandemic. Furthering that notion, the most recent entry into canon has been causing chaos on streaming this week, reinforcing its enduring credentials.

Per FlixPatrol, the Texas-set story of a ranch being infiltrated and decimated by a rogue band of murderous maniacs has cracked the Netflix Top 10 in multiple countries around the world, while it’s also kicked the doors down on the Prime Video worldwide rankings, too. The Purge 6 plans to bring back Frank Grillo for one more round, but can anyone really say with any confidence that it’ll truly be the end of the line?
