‘The Flash’ director addresses the elephant in the room by discussing Ezra Miller’s DCU future

Miller is on a journey of recovery.

Despite all the controversies surrounding their personal life, Ezra Miller is returning to the DCU world with what could arguably be the biggest superhero movie of the year. The Flash is soon making its global premiere, so director Andrés Muschietti thought this might be the perfect opportunity to get the icky element out of the way by addressing it head-on.

The Flash features a host of character cameos from all over the DC universe. The story is also very emotionally charged if the latest trailer is anything to go by, with the numerous snippets all hinting that Muschietti’s film will put the entire live-action DC world into a nostalgic retrospect.

Add that to the unanimous acclaim the movie is receiving with its previews, and The Flash is poised to become the best superhero flick in years. Almost.

There’s still Ezra Miller’s problematic behavior casting an unignorable shadow on the movie’s prospects. The actor has, after all, been arrested on numerous occasions for assault and burglary, while also facing accusations of grooming minors. If there’s one thing Hollywood has learned over the past decade, it’s to take this stuff seriously, but as Andrés Muschietti explains it to Vanity Fair, Miller is taking real steps to address their problems.

“[They’re] taking the steps to recovery, dealing with mental health issues, but [they’re] well. We talked to them not too long ago, and [they’re] very committed to get better.”

Does that mean there’s a future for Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster in James Gunn’s DC ensemble? The Flash director certainly hopes so.

“‘We didn’t talk about it,’ He said. ‘I think that we’re all waiting to see how this movie does. Of course, there’s excitement about continuing the story, especially if this movie is successful. There’s architecture in DC that is brewing and being created, and the question is: Will this new architecture absorb this story?’”

Gunn might feel well within his authority to disregard the SnyderVerse without a second glance, but he wouldn’t go so far as to turn a blind eye to a box office goldmine. If The Flash ends up a chart-topper, then we’ll likely see Ezra Miller in the role again, provided that they manage to put all this drama behind them.
