Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has been given a December 25th, 2012 release date. Deadline announced that Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow plan to open Luhrmann’s films on the same day as another Leonardo DiCaprio film, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Django Unchained is being distributed by Sony Pictures, so we can only assume that Warner Bros. wish to capitalize on both sets of press, which could be smart, but it could also be detrimental for both films on opening weekend.

I’m sure that both titles will do well at the box office, but on opening weekend at least, they will be pinned together in a very tight race. Personally, all this means for me is that I have to go to the movies twice in one day, and I’m sure many people will feel the same.

The Great Gatsby which is currently filming in Sydney, Australia, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Callan McAuliffe, Gemma Ward and Amitabh Bachchan and will be in cinemas on December 25th, 2012.
