Following in the footsteps of Jonathan Majors isn’t ideal at this current moment in time, but Marvel Studios will nonetheless be thrilled that Chris Pratt once again underlined his box office credentials by becoming the latest star to accomplish the rare feat of having two different movies spend consecutive weekends at the top of the domestic charts.
Obviously, the success of both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can’t be laid squarely at his feet, but it’s well worth nothing that the actor does take top billing in both. And yet, Pratt remains one of the more polarizing A-listers in Hollywood, one that a lot of people just can’t seem to get on board with.
He’s smart and self-aware enough to know that he has plenty of trolls and haters out there, but when reflecting on the issue in an interview with Page Six, he dipped into one of his favorite pastimes by comparing himself to none other than Jesus Christ in a roundabout way.
“I sure do but that’s nothing new, that’s nothing new, you know? If I was of this world, they would love me just like that but as it is, I’ve chosen out of this world. That’s John 15:18 through 20. That’s the way it is, nothing new, 2,000 years ago they hated Jesus, too. Like a rhino, stick your head down, you keep driving forward, you have thick skin and if anyone gets in your way, you stick the horn right up their ass!”
Given his beliefs, you’d imagine that Pratt isn’t directly drawing parallels between himself and Jesus, but he does at least use the Bible as a means to deal with adversity in his personal and professional lives, something that came in handy when James Gunn was initially fired from Vol. 3, although Dave Bautista took a different route and opted to call Disney fascists instead.
