Thor Almost Got An Epic Gun To Wield In Avengers: Infinity War

These pieces of concept art for Thor in Avengers: Infinity War reveal that we could have seen some very different takes on the God of Thunder.

Unused concept art for Thor in Avengers: Infinity War has shown us some very cool ideas for how the character might have looked in the film. Coming from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie book (and via Twitter user @Akaspidey), these images give us many different takes on how the God of Thunder almost appeared.

While many of them are subtle spins on the classic look, with a few hearkening back to Thor’s appearance in his first solo film or to Odin’s Asgardian outfits, some of them are pretty damn out there. My favorite is the extremely Jack Kirby-inspired white and black jumpsuit in the centre of the third image. It’s a big departure from Thor’s usual look and seems to be directly influenced by Kirby’s DC work.

The other ones I like seem to take inspiration from Han Solo, featuring jackets and blaster type weapons. Common to almost all of these is his eye patch, which some of the concepts seem to use as an excuse to give Thor a more space-pirate kind of look.

While the idea of Thor ditching hand-to-hand weaponry for a pistol or rifle is pretty cool, something about it just doesn’t seem right to me. After all, there are plenty of characters in the MCU who use guns as their primary weapon (the Winter Soldier, Star-Lord, War Machine, Black Widow and so on), but there’s something about Thor that just looks right with a gigantic weapon in his hand.

That’s probably why Stormbreaker seemed like such a good fit for him. When he arrived in the climactic attack on Wakanda during Avengers: Infinity War and blew enemies away with a furious burst of lightning, it just seemed right. And, if he’d have aimed for Thanos’ head, he might have averted the whole damn Snap fiasco.

Hmm, maybe he should have packed a gun, after all.
