It’s the summer season and this is the time where we get all the trailers for the awards season films. Yesterday, it was War Horse and today we get a teaser for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the adaptation of John Le Carré‘s complex surveillance/spy novel. The book is a thriller which involves the search of a Russian mole in the British Secret Service after the Cold War.
The main character here is George Smiley, who is an anti-James Bond. He is a flawed hero, a pot bellied, middle aged quiet man, who is fearsomely devoted to his job. In perfect casting, director Tomas Alfredson hired Gary Oldman, in a role which could bring him some serious awards.
The film is also packed to the rafters with great Brit talent that includes Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch and John Hurt. This is also Alfredson’s follow up to the stunning Let the Right One In, which was mercilessly butchered into an insanely overrated remake Let Me In, and it does look to carry over a similar uneasy vibe, while also looking entirely different.
The trailer looks stunning, with its off tone string score and chilly washed out visuals. This could be one to watch and is definitely one of my most anticipated for this year.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will be released in the UK on September 16th and in the US on November 18th. Watch the trailer below.
