Tom Hiddleston Confirms No Loki In Avengers: Age Of Ultron

In some rather unfortunate news, Tom Hiddleston has confirmed that Loki will not show up in Avengers: Age of Ultron. We had already heard from director Joss Whedon a few months back on the issue, and he said pretty much the same thing, telling us that Loki was not written into the first draft of the script. Now Hiddleston is confirming this news, which likely will disappoint many but at the same time, is perfectly understandable.

Hiddleston said the following to EW:

[Loki’s] not in it. Here’s the thing: I don’t think there’s anything else Loki could contribute to The Avengers, narratively. Joss gave me so many wonderful things to do in that first film that we’d only be trying to repeat ourselves, and probably less well in the second one.

When I think of all the things I loved as a child, for example, Hans Gruber wasn’t in Die Hard 2. And in Indiana Jones, by the time he moved from the Lost Ark to the Temple of Doom, there was a whole new bad guy. [Ed: even though Temple of Doom was an older bad guy, we’ll allow it.] I think keeping it fresh and new is good for The Avengers even though it’s a shame for me. And let’s face it, there’s seven or eight of them as it is, and Joss is thinking about adding two more, so the screen’s gonna be a busy place. But I had the time of my life on that film. It was the most fun ever.”

With a new villain being introduced in the upcoming sequel, and so many superheroes as it is, there would be little to no room for Loki. Besides, we don’t know what his fate in Thor: The Dark World will be yet. He may not even survive the film. So again, I absolutely understand Whedon’s decision not to include him. Besides, he’s already had his time to shine, it will be fun to see the Avengers go up against a new threat.

Like with all Marvel films, only time will tell how everything plays out. For now though, it looks like Loki won’t be appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
