The Two MCU Movies You Should Revisit Before Seeing Captain Marvel

Though Captain Marvel exists in its own relatively isolated point on the MCU timeline, this is still a Marvel Studios film we’re talking about, meaning that the feature holds quite a few connections to fellow franchise entries. And in a new piece from MCU Cosmic, Jeremy Conrad suggests two movies that you might want to revisit before giving Carol Danvers’ solo debut a try.

The first of the two recommendations is 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and anyone who’s been keeping track of the Captain Marvel cast list will likely know why. Specifically, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s ‘90s-based sci-fi will feature younger versions of Guardians villains Korath and Ronan the Accuser. More generally, James Gunn’s film was the first to introduce the Kree to the MCU, who are also central to the story of Captain Marvel.

The other film that it’s advised you revisit is 2012’s The Avengers, which offered some insight into “Project Pegasus” and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s attempts to make “Phase 2” weapons from the Tesseract. As well as revisiting this secret operation, Conrad claims that Captain Marvel contains further nods to Joss Whedon’s flick that he refrains from spoiling.

Indeed, the promotion for Captain Marvel has already made some explicit references to the Phase 1 line-up of the Avengers, and the inclusion of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson makes this connection seem all more apparent. It’s even believed that the upcoming Avengers: Endgame will serve as a passing of the torch between two generations of heroes, as some of the franchise’s original stars exit from the saga while Carol assumes her place at the forefront of the cinematic universe.

We’ll see who’s still around for the MCU’s next phase when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, but in the meantime, Captain Marvel is headed for cinemas on March 8th.
