Universal Moving Forward With A Fast And Furious Cinematic Universe

With spinoffs for Cipher and a few other characters in the works, it seems Universal is now pushing forward with a Fast and Furious cinematic universe.

It’s been a wild ride watching The Fast and the Furious franchise blossom from a Day-Glo infused street racing flick into a multi-billion dollar juggernaut, but it’s such an enjoyable series with a certain magic that just can’t be replicated. Most of that credit belongs to Vin Diesel, of course, and the fantastic cast and crew that he’s assembled over 8 adrenaline-packed movies, and it seems that Universal plans to milk the series for all it’s worth over the next few years.

For one, we know that Fast & Furious 9 is already in production, though shooting hasn’t officially kicked off yet. Just last month, though, Diesel revealed (on Instagram, of course) that John Cena had boarded the film in an undisclosed role. It sounds like he’ll likely fill a hole left by Dwayne Johnson, who unfortunately won’t be returning.

Don’t worry about him though, as he’s got his own Fast and Furious spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw, headed to theaters this summer. Meanwhile, another spinoff starring Charlize Theron’s villainous Cipher is also in production, as is an all-female spinoff, so fans won’t have to wait long in between movies to get their Fast fix.

In fact, if what we’re hearing from our sources is correct, viewers will be getting more Fast and Furious action than they’re ready for over the next few years, as Universal is currently building a cinematic universe for the franchise. Apparently, a few seeds will be planted in the aforementioned Hobbs & Shaw, while those spinoffs for Cipher and the all-female squad will continue to build out the franchise as well.

Beyond all that though, and, of course, Fast & Furious 9, it’s said that the studio is eyeing spinoffs for many of the other main characters, as they’re hoping to go full steam ahead with creating a cinematic universe in the vein of what Marvel’s done. They’ll all stick with the same theme, too, with all the movies revolving around car chases, high-octane action scenes and all the other things that the franchise is known for.

In short, it’s going to be a busy couple of years for Fast and Furious fans and we can’t wait to see where the series goes from here.
