The day is finally here, folks. After months of anticipation we now have our first look at Marvel Studios’ upcoming science fiction film, Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailer premiered tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live and you can now watch it online in all its geeky glory.
So, there you have it, the first official trailer for what is perhaps the most interesting Marvel film yet. It’s great to finally get a good look at what director James Gunn has been cooking up and I must say, I’m quite pleased with what’s on display here. Despite initial concerns, I don’t think Marvel will have any problems with getting audiences into theatres for this one. Guardians of the Galaxy looks like a ton of fun and quite different from the studio’s past efforts. And I mean that in a good way.
Though the footage here mostly serves as an introduction to the titular Guardians, there are a couple things to note. For one, I was surprised by how much humor is in the film, but I’m pleased to see that it will have a bit of a lighter/more comedic tone. With all the dark, gritty superhero movies out there, it will be a nice change of pace to have something that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Also, although not much in the way of action is revealed, what’s shown near the end looks very stylish, wild and thrilling, and I can’t wait to see more.
All in all the trailer is a great first look and I think that it will win a lot of people over who were previously on the fence. I know I’m sold.
Guardians of the Galaxy features a unique ragtag group of characters led by Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord. Also along for the ride are Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel as Groot and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer.
Here’s the official synopsis:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
