Struggling to make much of an impression on the children of his newfound love interest, Ferrell’s amicable radio executive is anything but a convincing stepdad – let alone a good surrogate father. That predicament suddenly spirals out of control when, all of a sudden, Mark Wahlberg’s father returns to the scene to win over the affection of his estranged kids. Though he’s not in line to pick up any Father of the Year awards, Wahlberg’s alpha male represents a direct threat to Ferrell’s do-gooder, and it isn’t long before the two become embroiled in childish games as they constantly attempt to one-up each other.

While humorous in parts – Ferrell trying to get to grips with a Harley-Davidson is a particular highlight – it’s difficult to muster any form of excitement for Daddy’s Home. There’s no question that the central pair harbor a solid chemistry, but the core premise is generic at best, and we can foresee a scenario where Paramount’s comedy is muscled off the scene during the busy holiday period.

After putting bad guys behind bars in their own eccentric way in The Other Guys, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg will find themselves at ends with one another when Daddy’s Home opens in theaters on December 26. Sean Anders and John Morris are behind the lens.

Daddy’s Home follows a mild-mannered radio executive (Ferrell) who strives to become the best stepdad to his wife’s two children, but complications ensue when their freewheeling and freeloading real father (Wahlberg) arrives, forcing him to compete for the affection of the kids.
